Magic Books
I am a great fan of magic books. Call me a luddite, but although there are some advantages to DVDs, there is nothing to beat studying a classic book of magic. My little library of magic books is of a reasonable size, and I hope to give brief reviews here of books I am currently reading, or classics to commend. I will also make links available for UK/US readers interested in purchasing where possible.

Prism – The Color Series of Mentalism So as a Brit, I object to the American spelling in the subtitle (!) but other than that, this is a GREAT book. Methods are elegant and (generally) simple. Presentations are very creative and entertaining. Routining is strong. There is a wide range of effects here – something for everyone. There are at least 3 items in here which I would use straight away, and many more provide much food for thought. A stimulating read. Highly recommended.

Strong Magic Whilst there are plenty of books about the presentation of stage magic, Darwin Ortiz wrote one of the first of its kind on the presentation of close-up magic and it remains as useful today in this new reprint as ever. I have quite an analytical mind, but I could not believe the way in which he analyses every aspect of performance and how to get a better reaction from your magic. Read, study and apply. It will repay the time.

The Amazing Miracles of Shigeo Takagi Another pet favourite this one, only recently re-published (to my great delight since I had been trying to track it down for ages after borrowing it from a friend!). Full of wonderful and extremely visual. The ‘Spectator Cuts the Aces’ routine is one of the easiest and best around, in my opinion, and his presentation of the classic ‘Wild Card’ is really beautiful. So much other good stuff in here though, with cards, coins, ropes, silks, linking rings etc. Wonderful.
